Combating Mold in Your Home

Mold is caused by humid conditions, such as those found in a basement or garage. Usually, these areas remain moist because of inadequate ventilation, which does not let air to flow properly. Mold is usually just ugly and causes a musty or humid smell in the area where it is present. However, people who suffer from nasal allergies may have respiratory problems when mold is present.

Any spaces in your home that presently have mold need to be dried out. You can do this by improving the ventilation and ensuring that moist areas are drier. A fan is one way to get areas that are normally wet to dry out. In a garage, the best technique to keep it dry is to use what you own. If the air outside is dry, warm air, then you can lift the garage door and any other windows and doors and let the moist air out. This is an awesome way to keep your garage from getting moldy. In homes where the attic access is located in the garage, you can use the dry, hot attic air to keep the garage aired out. During the late spring, summer and early fall, opening the attic access into the garage will not only help keep mold out of your garage, but it will also help your home keep cool.

If the attic access opening to your residence is located in the garage, and the air trapped in the attic is warm and dry (as is usually the case during the late spring, summer, and early fall months), you can open the attic access and allow that hot, dry air to go around. This will not only help the wet conditions, it will have the added result of cooling the interior of the house.

Any type of cloth, however, will have to be washed using hot water. After washing the article, you will need to make sure that it dries completely. Once you get the article clean, you will need to make sure that mold does not grow again.

The mold that is poisonous is known as black mold. Generally, black mold only forms when there is a natural disaster such as bad flooding. This sort of mold can be very dangerous and is likely to cause health concerns. Although this kind of mold needs to be cleaned straight away, it is also true that black mold spores become airborne with no trouble. Once this happens, mold will start to grow in places that it never grew previously. If you do find black mold in your home, when it is cleaned you need to make sure that the spores are not released into the air. If black mold has dried on a surface, you'll need to dampen the area before you clean it. Close off other rooms to prevent the mold from spreading throughout your home.

Keeping mold away from your home does not have to cost a fortune, nor does it have be difficult. Prevention is key, especially if you know of moist and damp areas in your home. But the trouble is well worth it.
